Build a Habit

Set a target to meet every day, or over any run of days, and follow your streak on the heatmap and the habit's calendar.

Updated

A habit is a target you want to keep meeting, such as a number of steps a day, a weekly amount of exercise, a limit on caffeine, or a sauna every few days. Every day, Kaizora checks it over a window of days ending that day, from your data, typed in or imported.

Add a Habit

  1. Open Habits in the sidebar and choose Add habit, or search for Add habit… from anywhere.
  2. Choose the Metric, any metric from Step Count to Net Cash Flow.
  3. Choose the Goal: At least or At most.
  4. Type the Target, and pick its Unit, in whichever unit you think in. Choose times instead to count how many times the metric is logged, such as weighing yourself at least once a day.
  5. Choose what it’s checked Over: 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, 365 days, or Other to type any number of days.
  6. Choose Add.

A habit has no name of its own: it’s described by what you chose, such as “At least 8,000 steps a day”, “At least 150 min in any 7 days”, or “Every 3 days”.

How a Day Is Checked

Each day, a habit is checked over its window: that day and the days just before it. A 7-day window is any 7 days in a row, not a calendar week, so a new week never resets it, and “every 3 days” is simply a 3-day window with at least one entry.

  • A metric that adds up, such as steps, exercise minutes, or protein, is checked by its total over the window.
  • A metric that’s averaged, such as weight or resting heart rate, is checked by its average, and the habit says “on average”.
  • A habit in times counts the window’s entries. Each kind of thing also has a count of its own, such as Foods Logged or Transactions Logged, so keeping a log can be a habit too.

Days start at midnight in your time zone. Once you’ve logged a metric that adds up, a window with nothing logged counts as zero: it meets “at most 200 mg of caffeine a day” and misses “at least 8,000 steps a day”. An averaged metric with nothing in the window has no average, so the day isn’t met.

Streaks and Heatmaps

Your habits share one heatmap of the last four weeks, on Home and on Habits: a row per habit and a column per day, each Met, Missed, or with No data, then the habit’s streak, its days in a row. Today counts once you’ve met it, and until then it doesn’t break your streak.

Choose a habit to open its page: a year’s calendar heatmap, with Previous year and Next year, and a table of each day’s value over its window.

Change or Delete a Habit

Open the habit’s … menu: Edit changes any of its choices, and its history follows at once. Delete removes the habit; your data stays, and adding the same habit again brings its history back, since it’s worked out from your data.

Habits and Reference Ranges

A habit is a target you aim to meet, and its reminders nudge you. A reference range is a band to stay within, and a value outside it is flagged.
